The 7 Year Itch: Seals Win District Baseball Crown

WILLIAMSPORT — Taking a cue from two teammates who embody strength, toughness and not giving up, Selinsgrove started and finished Wednesday's district final with plays that champions are made of.

In both instances, the Seals could have stuck with the hand they were dealt and no one would have batted an eye. Instead, they aggressively pursued more and they were rewarded with the program's first district championship since 2009.

Tyler Showers allowed one run on six hits and, backed by tide-turning defense, made Zac Broome's two-run, third-inning single stand up for a 2-1 victory over Montoursville in the District 4 Class AAA title game...

Seals knock off five-time defending champs Shore

WILLIAMSPORT — If Jersey Shore taught District 4 anything during a remarkable run of five Class AAA baseball titles, it’s that the Bulldogs don’t give away postseason games. You have to find a way to beat the champs.

Friday an inspired Selinsgrove team did.

The Seals scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, the last two on Tyler Showers’ one-out liner to center field, and walked off Bowman Field with a stunning 5-4 victory in a District 4-AAA semifinal.

“I can’t believe this just happened,” said Showers. “It’s insane because they’re a dynasty around here. We just took down a giant.”...

SELINSGROVE — Selinsgrove coach Brent Beiler had a speedster waiting on the bench.

The only question for Beiler was when to tell Ricky Cope to trot out to the base paths. Once the Seals put a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh, it was time.

Cope scored the winning run to give Selinsgrove a walk-off win, 3-2, over Mifflinburg in a Heartland Athletic Conference Division I game on Friday.

With the win, Selinsgrove improved to 14-5 (10-4 HAC-I)while Mifflinburg fell to 9-11 (5-9), knocking the Wildcats from playoff contention.

The Seals mustered one hit off of Wildcats ace Dillan Weikel while consistently hitting the ball hard only to have it caught by a Wildcats fielder.

High school roundup: Selinsgrove baseball completes sweep of Jersey Shore

JERSEY SHORE — Ian Weaver’s run-scoring single in the top of the fourth inning scored Evan Poust with the go-ahead run and Selinsgrove went on to record a 5-2 victory over the host Bulldogs in a Heartland-I contest Thursday.

Logan Leiby’s RBI single and an error led to two more runs an inning later as the Seals (13-5, 9-4 in HAC-I) bumped their lead to 5-2...

H.S. Baseball: Seals can't muster offense against Central Mountain ace

SELINSGROVE — It was evident early in Wednesday’s game that scoring chances would be tough to come by against Central Mountain ace Alex Garbrick.

So, when Selinsgrove put runners at first and second with one out in the second inning, things were looking positive for the home team.

After Garbrick retired the first four batters of the game, Morgan Fisher reached on an error and took second on Evan Poust’s hit-and-run single. But four pitches later, Garbrick got Bailey Hottenstein to line out to shortstop Toner Corl, who tug a courtesy runner trying to move to third and just like that, the threat was over...

H.S. Roundup: Seals baseball team downs Greenwood

SELINSGROVE — Tyler Showers, Ian Weaver and Evan Poust combined to pitch Selinsgrove to a 5-1 nonleague victory over Greenwood on Friday.

The trio limited Greenwood to five hits and three walks, although they combined for just two strikeouts. Showers pitched the first four innings and got the win for Selinsgrove.

Zac Broome led the Seals at the plate batting 2-for-3 and driving in a run. Brendan Carner and Logan Sears both drove in runs with nary a hit.

Selinsgrove didn’t have to beat Shikellamy to validate its win streak or anything about this season’s success, but Monday’s win certainly made it all feel more authentic.

The Seals had lost seven consecutive games in the cross-river rivalry, a string that spanned three seasons. During that time, they were no-hit by the Braves’ Nick Dunn and lost a heart-breaking district playoff game at Shikellamy last year.

So if Saturday’s 17-hit barrage against Montoursville and yesterday’s come-from-behind win over Jersey Shore — both District 4 heavyweights — were considerable steps forward for the Seals, beating Shikellamy was like a Mike Powell long jump...

SUNBURY — After pitching four relatively stress-free innings, Tyler Showers walked onto a tightrope in the fifth Monday.

Selinsgrove’s senior ace loaded the bases with no outs for the middle of Shikellamy’s order, putting the Seals’ three-run lead in serious jeopardy.

Showers responded with a strikeout, then another, and he was one strike away from an escape that would make Houdini jealous. But the Braves wobbled him with a two-run hit, and promptly tied the game with another hit off a two-strike pitch...

SELINSGROVE — Evan Poust admitted that in a different situation he may have taken another pitch or two and tried to coax a walk from Montoursville ace Brycen Mussina.

However, with the bases loaded in the second inning Saturday, Selinsgrove’s junior third baseman wanted to make more of an impact.

Poust drilled a 2-0 Mussina fastball up the middle for a two-run single that ignited a stunning seven-run rally....

MIFFLINBURG — Selinsgrove’s Tyler Showers outdueled Mifflinburg’s Dillan Weikel Wednesday afternoon leading the Seals baseball team to a 3-0 win over the Wildcats in a Heartland Athletic Conference Division I showdown.

The Wildcats (5-3) had a 7-5 edge in hits but made mistakes on the basepaths that kept them off the scoreboard....

DANVILLE — When opportunities materialize — whether in the top of the first inning or the bottom of the sixth — one must cash in.

If not, plenty of negative waves can begin crashing over any baseball team.

So with the door wide open in the final inning, Selinsgrove took advantage, prying open what had been a really snug affair....

SELINSGROVE — Kyle Leitzel was clearly more comfortable hitting than pitching in the wind tunnel that was Selinsgrove’s baseball field Friday.

The Shikellamy senior went 3-for-4 at the plate — collecting every hit for the cycle except a home run — with an RBI and a run scored...http://www.dailyitem.com/sports/h-s-baseball-leitzel-braves-hold-off-shikellamy/article_3c2b6a7e-f884-11e5-b1b1-13ba7e78f8a0.html
